Yes, the pre wedding period might be full of planning, decisions and admin but that honeymoon phase has a pretty hefty checklist to follow too - especially if you change your name. From updating your details everywhere to opening a joint bank account (we never needed one until people wrote cheques in both our names in our cards). From writing thank yous to collecting your photos to selling your leftover decor - there’s a mountain of jobs to do.

I had a real confidence of crisis a few weeks before the wedding where I thought I actually don’t want to change my name. Changing your name is a big thing whether you’re sure you want to, sure you don’t want to or generally aren’t sure and your name is so much a part of you and who you are and I definitely had a panicky moment.

We booked our honeymoon back in November or December of last year but we’d settled on the plan a little while before that. We thought quite a bit about where we wanted to go and Jos’ passport has expired and whilst we really need to get around to renewing it, we’d pretty much already made up our minds on what we wanted to do.

Our venue had all of February and March free so we could pick a date that suited us. We got together on 7th May 2010 and engaged on 7th October 2018 so getting hitched on 7th February 2020 which was a Friday made pleasant sense, combined with the fact it was my Mum’s birthday that weekend too seemed fun and so we booked it.

It was exactly how we wanted it to be in the end. I worried slightly that it would be so informal that it wouldn’t feel ‘proper’ but with both our Mum’s bawling and saying our vows, it really felt like ‘something’. I wasn’t nervous, I didn’t have to walk down an aisle in front of people, the only guests looking at us were our closest loved ones and it meant we could 100% focus on us and the vows, and worry about the party later.

Whether it’s a big day, a small day, an elopement or a really unconventional day - there’s no doubting that ALL weddings require some degree of planning. Ok maybe, maybe a drive thru ceremony conducted by Elvis on a drunken whim doesn’t have any planning involved but ya know, most others do.
We’re getting married in 7 months and by the time we viewed and booked our venue we had under a year to go so the planning has got real very quickly. We’re having a tiny wedding followed by a big party in February of next year and my spreadsheet has been a lifesaver when it comes to organising our weekend of festivities.
